"Oh, you're taking those kinds of pictures huh?"
"Lucky guy, did you see her naked?!"
These are some of the comments I receive from friends and family when I tell them that I shoot boudoir photography. Some people perceive a male photographer shooting boudoir as dirty, sexist, or even degrading. However, if a female photographer decides to shoot boudoir the tone changes, and people are very supportive, it suddenly becomes artistic and empowering. Why the stigma?
To tell you the truth, in an industry dominated by women, it challenges me in different ways. First, it is an opportunity to help women feel great about themselves. It also allows me to expand my creative side as an artist by capturing the essence of a person. When I was asked to do a boudoir shoot for the first time, I will admit that I was nervous as I had never done this type of photography before, but also excited as an artist as it was a new challenge for me.
People often misunderstand that though I am a guy taking pictures of women, I am an artist and I have a reputation to uphold. I want to be known as a photographer who acts like a gentleman at all times and who respects each client. Most of all, I want to be that photographer that past clients can't stop talking about to their friends when recommending me to others!
There are also great benefits of meeting a male photographer who shoots boudoir. One big advantage is that being a guy, I know what would appeal to most guys. Believe it or not but:
Men tend to find women in lingerie or a button-up shirt more attractive than being naked!
Men tend to like more suggestive images that leave more to the imagination. That's what makes boudoir photography so much exciting, is that the clothing options are almost unlimited! From unbuttoned jeans and a white tank top, bra and panties, or even a scarf covering essential areas. The options are endless and will be appealing to guys.
In conclusion among all of the comments that come of being a male in the boudoir photography business, I go back to my comment that I AM a guy but a business owner, a gentleman, and an artist. I will continue to help empower women as so many of my female photographers out there do daily!
